Dave's Law

I'd love to have a law named after me, so here goes:

Dave's Law

users should not have to become mini-librarians in order to use the library

If you ever find yourself needing to invoke Dave's Law, please let me know :-)

But Dave! But Dave! What about "information literacy"!? Hmmmmmmm?

  2. Dave Pattern says:

Isn't Info Lit about evaluating the information you find, rather than just learning how to search a dozen different database interfaces using Boolean or learning what all the library terminology means?

  3. Information literacy, I suggest, should be about awareness of information tools and their coverage etc, plus, as you say, evaluating information. It shouldn't be about learning how to use tools, click by click. Yuck – I used to hate it when I was supposed to teach that sort of thing to students. Totally pointless in most cases anyway, as the interfaces would regularly change.
